Not So Simple Choices

Bells and whistle, sparkles and glitter, fancy shmancy, what do all these have in common? They are usually beating the proverbial dead horse. Give the poor thing a break and take off the dark glasses you’re wearing because your latest creation’s future is so bright you’ve got to wear shades. Remember to K.I.S.S. simple Simon.

It’s Not All Black and White

As designers we all know that the right color in the right amount will have the right effect/affect. So what happens when the colors we are forced to use (despite all our begging and pleading to use another color scheme or to just enhance the present one) is probably the worst choice on the planet for a particular project?

Stop Everything Now!

So you’ve just been busting your butt on a project, herded all those cats, got the “I like it” from the “I’ll know it when I see it” people, get the devs on board, got whoever of the powers that be to sign off on the project and you’re ready to get down to some serious design work and then all of a sudden the project comes to a screeching, gut punching, project neutering halt. You hang your head in resignation at the loss of all that momentum. What’s worse is that it’s all because of a technicality.

Unplug!

Just a friendly reminder, you’re always going to have stuffs to do, you’re always going to be behind, you’re always going to have that next project waiting on you; so remember to unplug.

Staying plugged in all the time is counter productive to being a designer. The world is our inspiration and if we only see the world through a computer then we’re seeing it through some one else’s eyes.

To get all Yoda, inspiration is all around you. It flows through; but, if you don’t get out there your flow isn’t going to. So step away from this blog, from your keyboard, from your desk, and from whatever else you need to and get out there and get some of that good ole fashioned inspiration.

What is a designer?

Unless you’re a specialised designer chances are that you wear many hats. Those chances get even higher if you’re the only designer in your team, or even your company; at this point could probably open a hat store. Gone are the days when you could just be a web designer, graphic designer, marketing designer, well you get the idea. In todays world you have to be versed in at least some part of all roles you touch.
